To fix your phone line
you have to
isolate the problem and find out if the trouble is in the house or
outside. To do that you have to find your main jack (also called the
d-mark). The best way to do that is to look at your home from the
outside where the telephone cable is.(In some areas on the street, and
in other areas in the back).Look for a black phone wire (a smaller
guage than tv cable). The point where that phone wire enters the house
is called the d-mark, the main jack is at that spot from the other
side (inside the house).

If there are no other
wires connected
to the main jack, all you have to do is make sure that your phone is
ok(you can do that by plugging your phone into your neighbors phone
jack for a minute, if it works there you are good to go). Plug it into
your main jack if it does not work you are done that means the trouble
is outside. Call your local phone company(there are no charges for
fixing outside trouble).

If your main phone jack
has other
wires connected to it that feed other jacks in the house you have to
seperate these wires and leave the main wire coming from outside
connected to the jack. Now do the phone thing again plug it in (make
sure the phone is good first) if the phone works in the main jack with
the other inside wires disconnected, that means there is a problem on
one of the inside wires and you cleared the trouble by removing the
wires.

Now to know which wire is
causing
the problem connect one wire at a time and do the phone test until you
connect a wire and lose your dial tone right after, that tells you that
the last wire that you connected is the one that is causing all the
trouble, you could leave it out and restore service to all the jacks
except the ones fed by that specific wire, or you could replace that
wire, you could do that by using the same pair of wires on both ends of
the cable.
